Throughout the years, for drivers and the environment, electric vehicles have become increasingly popular.
Electric vehicles (EV) mainly run on electric energy and just like vehicles that use fossil fuels, whether that be diesel or gasoline, electric vehicles are cars, buses, and trucks.
Greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) have become a significant issue for our environment and non-electric vehicles are playing a large part. 30% of New York City’s GHGs are coming from the passenger, residential vehicle.
Increasing the amount of EV’s in the five boroughs is critical for New York City’s fight to reduce GHG emission by 80% by 2050.
Electrifying New York
The New York Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Mayor’s Office of Climate and Sustainability has created “An Electric Vehicle Vision Plan for New York City” which includes the enactment of more EVs.
Initiative One: For there to be at least eighty (80) EV plugs by 2025 throughout New York City
So far, the DOT has completed the first two installations of charging plugs in Manhattan in Delancey-Essex and Court Square municipal garages. By mid-2022 there is said to be an additional five charging plugs, for a total of 28 plugs.
NYC DOT is committed to expanding the number of fast charging options by adding chargers up to an additional seven locations bringing the fast-charging network to twenty-three (23) stations with at least eighty-four (84) fast charging units.
As well as twenty-two (22) out of twenty-three (23) of the charging stations will be outside of Manhattan which allows New Yorkers to live within a 1.5-mile radius of a fast charger plug.
Initiative 2: Incorporate 20% of all spaces in municipal parking lots and garages with L2 chargers by 2025
First, electric vehicles have three levels of charging:
- Level 1 Charge: Low voltage (120v, Standard household outlet), up to 5 miles of range per hour of charging.
- Level 2 Charge: Mid-level voltage (240v, large appliances like dyers), up to 20 miles of range per hour of charging.
- Level 3 Charge: Fastest charging option (over 480v, DC Fast Charging), over 30 miles of range per 10 minutes of charging.
PlugNYC is being created to expand the amount of level 2 and DC charging stations throughout the streets of New York City.
The NYC DOT and the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability (MOS) are working with partners, like Con Edison, to increase public access to EV charging stations in the city.
The collaboration between the NYC DOT, MOS and Con Edison has resulted in the instillation of 120 Level 2 (L2) curbside charging stations throughout the five boroughs.
Additionally, by 2030 the city is striving to increase L2 chargers up to 40% of all parking spaces in municipal parking lots.
To Date Where Can I Buy or Lease an Electric Vehicle?
Many motor vehicle manufacturers are adopting the creation of electric vehicles.
To name a few, car companies such as Volkswagen, Chevy, Ford, Volvo, Hyundai, Toyota, and Tesla are car manufacturers that produce electric vehicles.
Every year, car companies are producing new electric models and vehicles.
Although, you may be considering the switch to electric vehicles as they have:
- Lower emissionsi
- Less noisei
- HOV lane accessi
- Discounts on tollsi
Electric vehicles are still mechanical vehicles. Therefore, if you or a loved one is operating or a passenger in a electric vehicle, the same rules as if you were in a fossil-fueled vehicle apply.
Being cautious about your surroundings and driving skills are critical no matter what type of vehicle you are in.
